RULES AND REGULATIONS

OF THE 2010

ERIE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

OPEN CLASS SHOW

1. BE SURE TO READ: (1) All rules imposed by the Erie County Agricultural Society; (2) All rules imposed by the State of Ohio; (3) All specific instructions under the department in which you wish to enter; (4) the summary of rules on the entry form.

2. Questions which arise will be answered by the department superintendents.

3. The Erie County Fair Board reserves the sole and absolute right to construe its own rules and regulations and to determine arbitrarily on matters and differences in regard thereto, from which there is no appeal.

4. Security and Police Officers are on duty on the grounds during the continuance of the Fair. The Erie County Fair Board is not and will not be responsible for damage, loss, or accident that may occur. Exhibitors are requested to give attention to their items during the Fair.

5. Disrespect by an exhibitor or agent toward officials, or any misrepresentation, in regard to entries in any department either by statements made or facts omitted, will render the entry ineligible to compete, and no premium will be paid.

6. Competition is open to all counties in Ohio.

7. All open class exhibitors must hold a membership ticket, season ticket, or youth wristband.

8. All entries must be made in the name of the owner of the article.

9. Entries should be recorded on forms provided and mailed to the Erie County Agricultural Society, P.O. Box 2436, Sandusky, OH 44870.

10. The closing date of all entries for each department will be 5 p.m., July 30, 2010.

11. All mail in entries in all departments must be postmarked no later than July 29, 2010.

12. The exhibitor must fill out the entry form completely. This includes designating the department, class and description of the item. The entry form must be signed by the exhibitor.

13. When the entry of an item is recorded in the books of the Secretary, tags will be given a number and class which are to placed on the item. Once the item has been entered, no changes in the entry will be permitted, unless it can be shown that a mistake has been made.

14. Superintendent has the right to change entry to a more appropriate category if needed.

15. Every item for competition must be placed on display on Monday, August 9, 2010 between 5-8 p.m. except for the following divisions: Farm & Garden Floriculture, and Baked Goods. Items for these departments must be placed on display on Tuesday, August 10, 2010.

16.No exhibits will be removed until officially released. Release time will be between 7 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, 2010. Not responsible for items after 8 p.m.

17. Exhibitor must provide receipt to remove item from display area.

18. No interference or communications with the judges will be allowed and any person who by letter or otherwise attempts to influence the decision of the judge, shall forfeit any and all premiums which may be or have been awarded and be ruled out of competition.

19. Premiums for all classes are: 1st- $5.00, 2nd - $3.00 and 3rd - $1.00.

20. Premiums must be picked up Tuesday through Sunday of the fair in the Fair Board Office.

21. Rosettes and ribbons will be awarded at time of judging or may be picked up in the Sr. Fair Board Office.

22. The judges are instructed not to award premiums, unless the items are deemed of worthy merit.

23. No person other than members of the Board, who are not competitors, will be allowed to see the entries, or to have access to the judges books after the awards are made.

24. If there is any question as to the regularity of any entry, or of the right of any item to compete in any given class, the judges shall report the same to the Superintendent of the Department for adjustment.

25. The Fair Board is not responsible for notifying winning exhibitors.

DEPARTMENT 1

FARM & GARDEN

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Judging will start at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010

2. All items must be placed for display on Tuesday, August 10th between 8-9 a.m.

3. Official release time is Sunday, August 15, at 7 p.m.

4. Every item in the exhibit must be raised by the exhibitor.

5. If you have been a dealer or professional in the past or earn 50% of your annual income by such means, you must enter as a Dealer/Professional.

6. No duplicate entries permitted.

7. Plates will be provided by the department. Every effort will be made to properly display all items.

8. All vegetables must have a stem left on top.

9. Small Vegetable Class - see specimen for display requirements.

10. Large Vegetable Class - see specimen for display requirements.

11. Fruit Class - display 5 items per specimen category.

12. Ribbons will be awarded at time of judging or may be picked up at the Sr. Fair Board Office.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CLASSES I & II

1 Erie County Care Facility Senior Citizens must bring all items for display on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 between 8-9 a.m.

2. Judging will start at 10:00 a.m.

3. Official Release time for the Erie County Care Facility Senior Citizens will be on Thursday, August 12, 2010 from 8-10 a.m.

4.Amateurs must bring all items for display on Friday, August 13, 2010 between 8-9 a.m.

5. Judging will start at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

6. Release time for Amateurs will be on Sunday, August 15, 2010 between 7 - 8 p.m.

7. Ribbons and Premiums may be picked up at the Fair Office.

9. All specimen flowers and herbs must be grown by the exhibitor.

10. Exhibitor may enter more than one specimen category.

11. Exhibitor is limited to one entry per specimen category.

12. All specimen must be clean and free of spray materials, disease and insects.

13. Suitable "clear glass" containers - pop or salad dressing bottles - furnished by exhibitor.                 No colored glass.

14. We reserve the right to re-classify an entry if the item has been mislabeled.

TIPS FOR EXHIBITING SPECIMEN FLOWERS AND PLANTS

1. Read all the Rules carefully.

2. Remove all foliage that would be under water to prevent decay.

3. Groom plants/specimen by removing dead and faded flowers and foliage. Do NOT use plant shine.

4. Check number of stems or blooms needed to qualify in each category.

5. Use a wedge made of wood to hold specimen upright in container.

6. Elements often considered in competition are perfections of flower, color, size and over-all condition of foliage and stem.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CLASSES III & IV

1. All arrangements must be the work of the exhibitor.

2. All plants must be in the possession of the exhibitor for more than one month for Class IV.

3. All materials need not be grown by exhibitor for Class III.

4. All specimen must be clean and free of spray materials, disease and insects.

5. Exhibitor may enter more than one class category.

6. No arrangement can compete in more than one class category.

7. Materials used in arrangements must be FRESH flowers, unless otherwise noted.

8. All arrangements must be brought to the fair completed.

9. Any repair work must be done by 9:00 a.m.

CLASS III - FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

1. Take A Walk On The Wild Side - gathered wild stuff in a mason jar, include string or yarn in a decorative display. 

2. Virtually From The Garden - all silk flower centerpiece, your choice container and colors, arrangement to exceed 10 inches.

3. Greens In Any Other Color - all fresh foliage in a one sided design, think texture, color and height.

4. Something Small And Pretty - fresh flower centerpiece in pretty container, not to exceed 8 inches.

5. Celebrate America - red, white and blue, one sided arrangement of flowers. Add decorative patriotic touches.

 

CLASS IV - PLANTS AND SUCH

1. House Plant - a single houseplant in a pretty pot.

2. Patio Pot - mixture of plants with some of them flowering.

3. Miniature Garden - small everything with a water feature.

4. Scarecrow - miniature size to scare away little crows.

BAKED GOODS

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Amateurs must bring all items for display on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 between 8-9 a.m.

2. Judging will start at 11:00 a.m.

3. Official release time is Sunday, August 15 between 7 - 8 p.m.

4. All pies, cakes, quick breads, yeast breads and cookies must be made from scratch and prepared by exhibitor. NO BOX CAKE MIXES in Classes II through VI.

5. All cakes, cake frostings and decorations must be edible.

6. All cakes must be displayed on foiled cardboard, not to exceed 1" past cake or in disposable foil cake pan. No Cake Plates of any kind.

7. All cakes and quick breads must be covered with clear wrap or in clear Ziploc plastic bags.

8. Cakes can be either 8" or 9" round or 9" x 13" rectangle.

9. One slice of each cake will be on display for the duration of the fair.

10.All pies must be displayed in clear Ziploc plastic bags.

11. All pies must be 8" or 9", in foil pans only.

12. No cream pies will be permitted.

13. One slice of each pie and a 1/2 loaf of each bread will be on display for the duration of the fair.

14. Five (5) cookies will be displayed on a paper plate & in a clear Ziploc plastic bag.

15. A cookie recipe cannot be entered in more than one cookie category.

16. All paper plates & Ziploc plastic bags will be provided by the department.

17. Exhibits are limited to one entry per category.

18. Entries will be judged on appearance, texture, flavor and aroma.

CLASS I - ENHANCED CAKE MIX (Boxed Mix)

Start with a boxed cake mix and embellish the recipe to create a dessert. Cakes can be 8" or 9" round, 8"or 9" square, 9" x 13" rectangle or Bundt. Cakes can be any variety. Cake cannot be just the cake mix baked and frosted. Recipe must be included

1. Bake your favorite batch of cookies (12 cookies) and place them in a decorated basket to give to your Grandmother to take along on her trip to New York City.

2. Deliver the basket to the Baked Goods Department on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, between 8-9 A.M.

3. Entries will be judged on the cookie as well as the creativity of the basket.

4. Entries may be picked up between 7 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, 2010.

5. Premiums will be: 1st-$10.00; 2nd-$5.00; 3rd-$3.00.

BAKED GOODS AUCTION

TUESDAY AUGUST 10, 2010

7:15 PM before the King and Queens Contest

1st and 2nd place winners in the Pies Category and Cakes Category will be eligible to auction their baked goods.

25% of the proceeds will go to the exhibitor

75% of the proceeds will go to the Fair Board. These proceeds will be used for the Open Class Show Program.

DEPARTMENT 4

PHOTOGRAPHY

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Judging will start at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010.

2. All items must be placed for display on Monday, August 10th, from 5-8 p.m.

3. Official release time is on Sunday, August 15th, between 7- 8 p.m.

4. All photography must be the work of the exhibitor.

5. All photography must have been taken within the last three (3) years.

6. If you have been a dealer of professional in the past, or have earned 50% of your annual income by such means, or are currently or previously enrolled in a photography school, you must enter as a Dealer/Professional. All other classes still apply (1-5) but we will have a separate designation for those entries.

7. Photographs may not be entered that have previously won a prize at the Erie County Fair.

8. Each photography exhibit must be no smaller than 5"x 7" and no larger than 16"x 20".

9. No Xerox copies or copies from any copy machine.

10. Each photograph must be matted with plain mount board (any color).

11. The mat (mount board) may not extend larger than 4" beyond the photograph.

12. The mat (mount board) must extend a minimum of 1/2" beyond the photograph to allow for the entry tag and hanging.

13. Anything displayed in a previous year can not be entered again.

14. No more than 2 entries per category in any given class.

15. All exhibits will be hanging for display and judging.

16. The Fair Board or volunteers are not responsible if the exhibit falls from its hanger or glue comes off mat.

17. Photographs exhibited are on public display during operating hours of the building, but will not be supervised at all times. We cannot guarantee the safety of exhibits, but precautions will be taken to protect them.

18. If an exhibit fails to meet requirements, it still may be displayed but will not be able to be considered for premium awards.

19. Framed prints will not be accepted.

20. Entry tags will be affixed to the lower right hand corner of the mat.

21. Because the Fair provides entertainment of a wholesome nature for the entire family, exhibits containing nudes or other questionable subject will not be accepted. The superintendent has the right to determine what is acceptable.

22. New This Year! All entries must be clearly marked on the back lower left with the name of the photographer, the class, and the category.

3. Official release time is Sunday, August 15th, between 7 - 8 p.m. You must present a claim check to pick up your work.

4. If you have been a dealer, or professional in the past, or earn 50% of your annual income by such means, you must enter as a Dealer/Professional.

6. No commercial kits allowed. Only original, creative art permitted.

8. The Fair provides entertainment of a wholesome nature for the entire family, exhibits containing nudes or other questionable subject will not be accepted. The superintendent has the right to determine what is acceptable.

9. Each entry in Class I & II shall be no smaller than 5"x 7" and no larger than 16"x 20".

10. Each entry in Class I, II, IV, V and VI must be mounted on art board, NOT poster board.

11. In Class I, II, IV, V and VI, the mount/art board,mat or frame may not extend larger than 6" beyond the work.

12. In class I, II, IV, V, VI HANGING HARDWARE IS REQUIRED by exhibitor/artist on the back of each piece. To display, entries may be stapled or nailed through corner of Art or mount board.

13. Class I, II, IV, V and VI may be submitted framed.

14. Items on stretched canvas may be displayed framed or not, but must adhere to size restrictions.

15. Figurative - representing an object or thing with out distortion or physical with our; person, animal, etc. drawn or painted to look realistic, i.e., lighthouse, flower, car, horse, etc. Abstract - A shape that has been altered or changed, i.e. stretched human body, pink elephant, eyeball in hand, blurry image etc.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Judging will start at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010.

2. All items must be placed for display on Monday, August 9th, from 5-8 p.m.

3. Official release time is on Sunday, August 15th, at 7 p.m.

4. All items must be owned by exhibitor

5. If you have been a dealer or professional in the past or earn 50% of your annual income by such means, you must enter as a Dealer/Professional.

6. All items to be displayed must be clean.

7. All antiques must be at least 50 years old.

8. One item to be displayed in an "antique class" category.

9. No duplicate entries are permitted in a category within a given class.

10. Each collection must display at least five (5) items but no more than twelve (12).

11. No display can take up more than 24" of space.

12. It is suggested that each piece of a collection be marked to assure each exhibitor that his/her full collection is returned. Do NOT mark your collection with your name.

Open Classes are open to all adults and youth in Ohio. All exhibitors must hold a membership to the Erie County Agricultural Society, a Season Pass to the Erie County Fair or an Erie County Fair wristband. All exhibitors must be registered by 5:00 pm on July 30, 2010. Mail in registrations must be postmarked no later than July 29, 2010. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
